
The main USP of the Department is the ability to combine scientific and engineering skills and resources to effectively bridge the gap between science and industry. The Department has a number of selected technological as well as application-oriented USPs, as summarized below:
- Extensive and top-ranked scientific knowledge in selected areas such as software validation, quantum technologies, pattern recognition and digital preservation.
- Outstanding know-how in various image processing fields and leading edge expertise in the area of high-performance image processing.
- Excellent know-how in the field of cryptography and security issues in networks and systems in general.
- Wide-ranging engineering know-how for embedded systems.
Substantial know-how was established by the close cooperation among the Department’s computer scientists and application experts in the following domains:
- Medical Care/e-Health
- Risk-Management/e-Environment
- Video and Image Processing for high-quality printing
- Software standardization
- Archiving of large data volumes
The mission of the Department is to make a significant contribution to ICT and to devote concerted efforts for guaranteeing operational efficiency and reliability of all critical infrastructures – both private and public – especially in times of potential ecological, economic and political crisis. Based on the evaluation, further development and provision of future-oriented technologies along with innovative procedures and sophisticated processes we are committed to fostering the roll-out of national infrastructures as well as the deployment of state-of-the-art technologies in the area of public administration (eGovernment, eEnvironment), energy, health care (eHealth), transportation, and telecommunications as well as the business and industrial sector with a view to positioning Austria at the forefront of the European ICT industry.
